Introducing the North Alabama Chapter of GRASP
How is GRASP different from other grief support groups? NOMA's GRASP Support Group is very specific to the loss of a loved one due to substance use whether it is an accidental overdose of a "recreational" user, or someone who has been diagnosed with longterm addiction. This group meets the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Please contact our Family Program Coordinator prior to attending the first meeting.
Mirroring our cohesive Family Support Group, NOMA's grief support is designed to provide:

Hope and Healing Grief Support Workshop
When we started Not One More Alabama in 2016, we did not expect the outpouring support from families who had lost loved ones to overdose. These mothers, fathers, sons and daughters came to us with a geniune need to save others from the pain they had endured.
They have helped us bring awareness to the overdose epidemic; put a beautiful face to the lives that were cut short; and shared their experiences with the goal of helping others maintain their relationships with loved ones who are struggling.
We are honored to co-sponsor the 4th Hope & Healing Grief Support Workshop at the beautiful, secluded Vision Lodge in Huntsville, AL. This weekend workshop is specifically for those who have lost a loved one to addiction. It is an action program for moving beyond loss and learning new coping strategies.
Lodging will be available on a limited basis. Families can share rooms that will sleep 1 - 6 people.
There is a small registration fee for this workshop. More information will be published soon. Financial assistance is available if needed. To discuss this possibility, please email NOMA @[email protected]. Each person must complete an application prior to registration being finalized.
We are thrilled that the workshop will be led by grief specialists Maggie Banger, LPC-S, Jack Sykstus, LMFT, CSA from Washington, D.C., and Matthew Amick, PhD, LMFT, from Atlanta, GA.
Maggie has been trained as a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist through the Grief Recovery Institute. She has also worked in the field of addiction treatment, having served in multiple roles with Bradford Health Services Warrior Lodge location, including being the Clinical Coordinator of the Extended Care Program and facilitating their grief group track for a few years. She has been a clinician for 19 years, the past 7.5 being in private practice, and has been invested in aiding people with the disease of addiction and moving through loss for the entirety of her counseling career.
Jack is a native of Huntsville and has spent the past 10 years working in the addiction field in various capacities.
Jack is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Substance Abuse Counselor, and Certified Grief Recovery Specialist through the Grief Recovery Institute. He works with individuals and families struggling with the effects of addiction, grief and loss.
Matthew is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who works with families, couples and individuals. He earned his doctorate in Medical Family Therapy at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. His professional roles have traversed the range of addiction treatment, from early intervention to family therapy. His research and clinical practice addresses ambiguous loss associated with various physical and mental health conditions.
