1,347

The number of Alabamians lost to overdose in 2021 was 1,347 according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). International Overdose Awareness Day is designated every year to draw attention to the number of people we are losing to overdose, share preventive solutions and support those impacted. NOMA designed and sold #EndOverdose T-Shirts to help raise awareness and selected a high traffic area to place purple flags for every Alabamian that died as a result of overdose in 2021.

24 Individuals attend Grief Support Workshop
Past workshop attendees report that the NOMA-sponsored workshop is "life changing," so we hope to provide it annually to family members who have lost someone to overdose or as a result of addiction. The weekend-long workshop is led by Grief Counselors. "We were made to feel so comfortable and so loved there. We were taught how to deal with our pain, our grief, guilt and anger ..." said one of this year's attendees.

6th Annual Memorial Angel Tree
One of NOMA's most important services is the Angel Tree on Tinsel Trail in Downtown Huntsville. We are honored to sponsor an anchor tree to commemorate loved ones lost to overdose and addiction. Each year the number of photos that family members share to memorialize a loved one grows. This year, more than 100 photos were submitted and we are honored to be entrusted to display them not only for surviving family members, but for our community to realize the immeasurable loss that addiction inflicts on loved ones.

Each year, NOMA hosts a Candlelight Memorial Service for families and friends who have lost loved ones. The service provides an opportunity to realize that they do not have to walk this journey alone. So many in our community are facing the holidays without their loved ones. We hope the tree and the service provide a small measure of comfort.
