Thursday, August 3, 2023 - NOMA hosted The Battle Before the Walk, a dinner at Valley Hill Country Club that featured David Battle as keynote speaker. Battle is a former Johnson High School and Auburn University football standout. His life took a drastic turn when a knee injury ended his college football career and dreams of playing for the NFL. The downward spiral ended in a prison sentence and near death.
As bleak as it sounds, Battle had people who believed in him until he believed in himself and turned his life around. Attendees learned of his remarkable story of redemption while enjoying a delicious dinner at Valley Hill Country Club, 8300 Valley Hill Drive SE, Huntsville, AL 35802.

Each year on August 31st, we observe International Overdose Awareness Day by placing a purple flag for each Alabamian who lost their life to overdose in the past 12 months.
The purple flags fill the corner of heavily travelled Pratt Avenue near downtown Huntsville and the historic 5 Points District. It is our hope that we never forgot those we have lost and never lose sight of our goal of Not One More Alabama Overdose, Lost Spirit, Grieving Heart.

End Addiction Hunt for Hope
In response to COVID precautions which restricted our ability to sponsor the annual End Heroin HSV Walk at Big Spring Park, we hosted our first End Addiction Hunt for Hope Scavenger Hunt over a two day period Feb. 26th and 27th. The response was just as we had hoped: fun for friends and family while adhering to social distancing guidelines, recognition of treatment and recovery resources in our area, distribution of the lifesaving drug Narcan, introduction of our parent coaches, and cash prizes to help stimulate our local economy. Feedback from participants has encouraged us to make this an annual event. Thank you to our gracious sponsors that helped make this event successful: T-Shirt and Swag Bag sponsors: Bradford Health Services, Crestwood Medical Center, Luminous Counseling and Consulting, Inc., Short Stop Screen Printing and Promotions, and Torch Technologies. Watch the fun enjoyed and discoveries made over the two-day event in the slideshow below:
2020 Events
Drug overdose deaths rise 31.4% in Alabama from 2019 - 2020 according to WHNT TV 19. 2020 was devastating on too many levels to list. Necessary restrictions to halt the spread of COVID-19 removed the very resources that individuals with substance use disorders need for support. Doors closed to those seeking recovery as well as those working to maintain their sobriety. Overdose deaths throughout the U.S. are on track to hit an all-time high and Alabama is no exception.
January 2020 - Addiction and Recovery Specialist Tim Hilton made the only in-person community education event in January - just before the state implemented shelter-in-place guidelines. Schedule events were put on hold. We begin to start strategizing on how to reach people with our mission while abiding by COVID restrictions. We hosted two additional virtual events with Tim in 2020.
February 2020 - The Discovery Room was on the road to Birmingham to take part in the End Heroin BHAM annual walk. Adults attending the walk toured the mock bedroom of a teen to learn of items “hidden in plain sight.” Early intervention is key to preventing the onset of addiction.

Nineteen volunteers for Not One More Alabama completed the Certified Peer Support Specialist training. A Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) is a person with significant lived experiences that professional training cannot replicate. Although the training by FORMLL was originally intended for individuals in recovery, it was opened to others that have been impacted by the disease of addiction. Not One More Alabama was formed by individuals that love, work with or have lost a loved one as a result of addiction. Please check back for dates of our next CPSS training. A Big Thank you to FORMLL for conducting our training and to Bentley Cadillac for allowing us to use their facilities for our training.
September 2017 - The first End Heroin HSV Walk was a huge success. Our goal was achieved to lift the vow of silence that has been associated with substance abuse and addiction so that we can help each other navigate this frightening journey. Success would have never been achieved without outstanding recognition by our local media and those of you that shared the event on your social media pages.
